Had previous issues with whirlpool in my past home with a portable dishwasher and its shoddy design. Customer servicce was sub standard and "cocky" when called. This unit was part of a kitchen remodel from the previous owner. Having been leary of whirlpool products, and knowing that they manufactured kitchenaid as well, I've kept a close eye on the operation of the Kitchenaid Stove, Microwave, and Dishwasher in my home. In the time frame of June 6, 2011 my dishwasher had no lights on the control panel. On going down to the basement to check the circuit breaker, I discovered that it was tripped. The kitchen remodelers put the dishwasher and garbage disposal on their own breaker. When I reset the breaker, there was a loud buzzing sound from the control panel of the dishwasher as my daughter verified and the breaker tripped immediately. As a volunteer firefighter of 30 years, and an electrician, I disassembled the control panel and observed a "hole" burned through the circuit board of the main control panel. I was concerned that the attached "Thermal cut out" did not protect this board. Purchased a new Control circuit board and re-assemble. This worked until around September 19th. Once again, no lights on the control panel, BUT no tripped breaker. Disassembled control panel once again and observed that there was no damage to the circuit board, however the Thermal Protection device was burned out. Obtained another Thermal Protection device, and installed it. There was a set of leads with this kit that was to be installed regardless of the condition of the existing wiring harness. With the viewing of the fires caused by the products of this company, and being that they have their hands in many "brand" names, I'll do my homework from now on to insure the safety of my family, and that there will be NO whirlpool appliances or their spin offs in my home! Nothing yet. I bought this used as it was in good condition. But I changed the front panel and noticed that the top control panel was partly broken at the mounting screws and that everything was cheaply made, the control board, the plastic and so on. Then I heard a news report and to my horror found this site. I didn't run it after that until I could get a GFCI breaker installed in the power cord (you can buy GFCI breakers that are power strips). My next fix is to install an Arc Fault circuit breaker in the breaker panel for this thing because the GFCI is no guaranty of anything (just one slight hope that a shorting control panel will cause a trip there). With the two of them together, MAYBE I won't burn to death - FYI both of those breaker types are only as good as their last test, as they are susceptible to failure due to transients from local lightning strikes, and so need to be tested regularly. For their part, Whirlpool should have conformal coated the circuit boards(to protect them from deterioration due to moisture), and fuse protected all high current lines in conjunction with a rigorous failure mode analysis before unleashing these on an unsuspecting public. Shame on you Whirlpool. If mine ever causes serious harm, I'll be the first in line as a plaintiff in the class action lawsuit that you turkeys seriously deserve! After the draining pattern is complete all buttons on the control panel are dead until the breaker which the dishwasher is on is reset. This was "repaired" once under manufacturer's original warranty. The repairman indicated that the control board had became unplugged. We purchased an extended service contract as the problem occurred soon after the first call. We have been working around it by resetting the dishwasher by turning the breaker off and then on again. Control board was cited as the issue when I reported the fact that it smelled like it was burning, it was melting very heat resistant items, was holding water and seemed to be putting dirty water back on clean dishes. We were told that the issue was with the control panel.We replaced it and still no fix, we then found that the element was burnt, that too was replaced. It is now doing the same thing. Now after the second replacement, it has: 1 - gone into a timer delay mode all by itself (we didn't press any buttons), and 2- jsut now it started a cancel drain mode wit hteh 2-minutes indicating in the countdown all by itself. So we poened it to see if it was full of water or something - it's not; the drain mode kicked on by itself 9as if you had pushed the "cancel-drain" button, and the motor started running but with no water in the tub to be drained. No fire or damage, but the root of Control Panel (no fire) and Controller Board (fire) failure is the same; the steam vent on the front upper left of the front panel is very poorly sealed! The soft Neoprene gasket around the mouth of the steam duct is not thick enough to adequately engage the throat of the steam vent. Steam from the duct and vent can, and does, easily impinge on the compartment containing the Control Panel and Controller Board, where it then condenses and precipitates. In the case of the Control Panel, repeated flexing of the the plastic circuit ribbon "sandwich" results in delamination of the "sandwich", and subsequent ingress of moisture, which in turn destroys the circuit, commonly in and around the "Start" button. In the case of the Controller Board, condensation on the various circuits of the board, and especially around the fuse assembly, can result in a short circuit, leading in turn to overheating of the board at the site of the short and, possibly, a fire. The fix for all the control related issues with these brands and models of dishwashers is quite inexpensive and easily introduced at the production level; constrain the vented steam to the vent itself, allowing none of the moisture to enter the controller compartment. It could be accomplished with roughly $0.25 (American) worth of aluminum flashing tape. That's how I fixed our dishwasher......after I purchased and installed the ENTIRE Control Panel subassembly. Price of the assembly, retail? $165. Probable cost of a replacement circuit "sandwich" (the ONLY portion of the assembly which ACTUALLY needs replacement)? Less than $20, my estimate. Now, I am the dubious owner of an extraneous subassembly, Control Panel, Whirlpool Dishwasher, which no longer functions, I do not want nor need. If you own a dishwasher manufactured by Whirlpool (to include Kenmore, Maytag, Jenn-Air, Kitchen Aide and about 20 other less commonly encountered brands), even IF you have not experienced any problems rela! ted to the Control Panel or Controller Board, it's only a matter of time before you do. Do yourself a favor, and perform a little preventive Product Improvement; using appropriate material, seal the gap between the steam vent and the controller compartment and/or install another soft gasket on top of the one already in place around the mouth of the steam duct.
